she started ranting about lesbians

My college room mate was on the phone the other day, and she started ranting about lesbians, and how they are an abomination to society and were disgusting, gross, etc. It was appalling, to say the least. She was shouting about it and I was sitting right there. Now, we go to a womans college. I was so furious. I am not lesbian, per say, although I have fallen for a woman. I still like men, and talk about them often, especially one, and so I understand that she thought I was completely straight, but what I don't get is how she could think I would be ok with hearing that. She was talking about this to her mother, and they were talking about how they were not tollerant of public homosexuality at all, and she said that she had just been pretending. It went on and on. I was shaking with anger by the end of this, because I have seen how she talks about people she thinks are gay, and it is horendous. I told her later, very calmly, that I would rather she kept these things to private conversations without me present, and that she may want to watch what she says on that topic in public. I was very nice about the whole thing, but underneath I was unbelievably angry. I almost wish I was less kind and had shouted at her and shocked her out of her self-righteousness with what was really going through my mind. But instead we talked it out calmly. I was not sure how to handle it at the time. Has anyone else encountered such homophobia?
